#983 – Sleep

I like it when I get lots of sleep. It’s a bit of a luxury these days. There’s always something else to do late in the evenings.

Sleep is important, I learned that the hard way. If I don’t get enough my whole day will be ruined. Is it really worth having a bad tired day? Watching that sitcom was so rewarding? (Nowadays it’s more like watching 30 minutes of the show and 20 minutes of commercials).

Several sleep facts for you:

  • Elephants sleep standing up during non-REM sleep, but lie down for REM sleep.
  • The record for the longest period without sleep is 18 days, 21 hours, 40 minutes during a rocking chair marathon. The record holder reported hallucinations, paranoia, blurred vision, slurred speech and memory and concentration lapses.
  • Anything less than five minutes to fall asleep at night means you’re sleep deprived. The ideal is between 10 and 15 minutes, meaning you’re still tired enough to sleep deeply, but not so exhausted you feel sleepy by day.
  • Exposure to noise at night can suppress immune function even if the sleeper doesn’t wake. Unfamiliar noise, and noise during the first and last two hours of sleep, has the greatest disruptive effect on the sleep cycle.
  • Snoring occurs only in non-REM sleep
  • Some studies suggest women need up to an hour’s extra sleep a night compared to men, and not getting it may be one reason women are much more susceptible to depression than men.

Your body needs rest. It craves sleep. All this blogging makes me so sleepy. Sleepy sleepy sleepy sheepy sheepy sheep sheep sheep zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz………….

#984 – Half showers

I don’t consider myself a dirty person but sometimes I just don’t feel like washing myself. It seems like such a waste – I’ll get dirty again anyway. What’s the point?

I believe I cracked the code and figured out a solution to my hygiene conundrum. I invented the half shower (patent pending).

A half shower is a regular shower. It can be as hot or cold as you wish but the only difference is that you don’t use any shampoo, soap or moisturizers. You just rinse yourself with water and that’s it. It usually lasts from 30 seconds to 1-2 minutes.

Obvious benefits:

  • saving heaps of time and God knows my time is extremely expensive
  • frequent washing with soap and shampoo kills too many bacteria on your skin (even the good ones) and thus compromises your body’s ability to fight diseases and other bad guys
  • good for the environment
  • economical
  • refreshing
  • energizing

There you have it. Remember if you’re having half showers you’re in breach of copyright law and owe me royalties.

PS: an even cheaper version of the above is just walking/running/dancing in the rain in your shorts/underwear or just nude. :) STREAKING!!!

#985 – Dancing by the river

I spent this beautiful day dancing by the Brisbane river. The scenery was stunning and the people friendly. The weather was perfect and it was a very relaxing setting.

What made this “venue” different is that we danced in the afternoon I.e. 3PM-7PM. That is daytime and out in the open. Not indoors and late evenings as is normally the case.

I also liked how joggers and pedestrians stopped to watch us dance. FYI we mostly danced zouk, bachata and salsa.

I loved it. Probably the best way to spend a Sunday.

#987 – Overtime

Because it’s like a mini promotion with at least a 50% salary bump.

Overtime work doesn’t happen often but it’s something I treasure. I think of it as unexpected money which I can use to treat myself or a friend to something good. Or I could donate some of it (not all of it, I’m not crazy) to a cause I’m fond of.

The thing is that spending on others makes us happier. I believe I saw a TED talk about it (http://www.ted.com/talks/michael_norton_how_to_buy_happiness.html) therefore it must be true.

#988 – Free food

I went to a film festival today and on our way there we decided to get some food into our tanks.

Benn took us into this little vegetarian restaurant which was perfect for me since I’m vegan. He was also kind enough to buy me dinner to express his gratitude for enjoying my company.  :) At least that’s what I think the reason was.

I couldn’t say no to a free meal. After all it’s my favorite dish – free food. It’s great to have friends like that.

#989 – Blueberries

blueberriesI eat them almost every day. They are delicious  :-P

My breakfast smoothie: 2 bananas, 1 cup of blueberries and a big handful of spinach or 1-2 leaves of kale plus some water or soy milk (otherwise it won’t blend). I always look forward to breakfast. Nom-nom-nom!!!

Usually I buy frozen blueberries because this way I get more bang for my buck. Blueberries are also high in anti-oxidants which repair muscle damage after my runs. I’m sure there are more benefits…

Some days I overdo it. My housemate has said that one day I’ll turn into a blueberry because I eat them all the time. They’re just so good, I cant stop!

#990 – My guitar

Her name’s Jayne. I got her for free from a friend who was living in a caravan. The previous inhabitants (an Italian couple I believe) left the guitar there before leaving Australia.

I don’t play every day. Sometimes I don’t play for weeks. Not sure why so…

But I love playing the guitar. Sometimes it’s great to strum some chords, play a melody or just muck around. I do that most often when I’m waiting on my computer to finish something or baking or just killing some time.

#991 – My beautiful smile

It happened again. I was happily eating almonds nom-nom-nom-style, and then my retainer got loose. Again.

I called my orthodontist and scheduled an appointment. Since it was only 2-3 weeks from my previous visit when they repaired the same issue but on my upper jaw they didn’t charge me.

Sweet! The first time I successfully paid with my smile!

992 – Unexpected gifts

You know that feeling when you’re so tired that you just don’t care anymore. Suddenly everything becomes funny. :D It’s a pretty cool state of temporary euphoria. I had that feeling at work today.

I was so tired and I didn’t care whether I did a good job or not. Sometimes I just did the work movements but no actual work (also known as pretend-work). Oooohhh it was terrible. But hilarious!

Kids, I had a good day today. Not just at work. :D

When I came home I went straight to bed after taking a quick shower. When I woke up my day (uhm.. evening) got even better. My housemates Benn and Emily had a gift for me.

They got me a vegan cookbook. They said it had my name written all over it and they just couldn’t not buy it for me.

That surely made my day! It’s exactly what I needed. Since I became vegan (about 3-4 months ago) I’ve struggled a bit with my dishes and therefore ate most of my meals raw (lots of salads for example) with boiled or roasted sweet potatoes. Mmmmm Po-Ta-To (Canada might know what I mean :D ) Excuse me for my inside joke.

OK.

I’m grateful for receiving such a wonderful gift from my friends. I will make every recipe from this cookbook as well. Thank you!!!

I realize this sounds corny but I feel blessed. :) Just a little bit…

I’m also grateful for that euphoric feeling at work, it helped me get through the day. Am I the only one who gets that feeling?
